The first Bookmobile for Lexington County was purchased in 1949. It held 1,600 books and was on the road 5 days a week and offered outside service only. By 1952, the Bookmobile was serving 50 schools.

In 1955 a new bookmobile was purchased. It held 2,000 volumes and was the first air-conditioned bookmobile in the state.

On June 16, 1969 a new custom-made bookmobile started on its journey. It was air-conditioned and held 3,000 volumes.

In 1982, "Sparky" came to the library, and still served in the Batesburg Branch Library 14 years later whilst their building was under renovation. "Sparky" was sold at County Auction and was purchased by a bookmobile patron.

In July 1994 a new 28 foot bookmobile was delivered and named "Rainbow."

Bookmobile stops include nursing homes, private schools, churches, kindergartens, housing developments, general stores and country crossroads.
